If there are any destinations I've missed just let me know and i'll add them the first chance I get. If you have any questions regarding the airline or the deal leave them in the comments and i'll give it my best shot :).

One last thing, I understand Malaysian Airlines is a controversial company of recent times, however if we could please keep the discussion civil and on topic it would be appreciated. Jokes in bad taste regarding the death of more than 500 innocent people is not appropriate.

Cheers

Mod: Note that MAS is in the progress of being restructured and privatised

    Here we go again…

indeed…can we just link to the numerous puns, MH17/MH370 references and other OT posts in the last Malaysian Airlines thread… it would save some time ;)

  • +4

I booked a ticket to Ha Noi with them a few days back. It was $748. I thought that was cheap and didnt realise that ticket price would plummet after the government privatisation. The same ticket is now $606 and i am spewing.

Also just a note, booking @ travel.com.au from kayak also have no booking fees for some reason.

I feel really sorry for these guys, after what's happened, it must be quite difficult for them to get people to fly with them :(

    • +9

especially when the last incident was not their fault.

        • +10

Don't forget the route they flew was approved by EuroControl..
The warning was avoid flying over Crimea? Eastern Ukraine? at altitudes below 20000ft. They were flying at 32000ish ft.

Just saying they certainly didn't "persist" as that implies they were told not to and disobeyed.
And they didn't disobey the warning either as they were flying above the specified altitude.

          @illumination:

I can't believe there are people who honestly think Malaysian Airlines are blameless in this.

A more prudent airline would have internal safety thresholds that exceed the minimum regulatory requirements.

Many airlines, including British Airways, Qantas, Cathay etc (http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jul/18/airlines-avoid-…), were not flying over the danger zone Ukraine whatever EuroControl said. It was unlucky that the hit plane ended up being Malaysian Airlines, but that does not change the fact that more robust risk management on their side would undoubtedly have mitigated / prevented this disaster.

The only thing you could say is that Malaysian airlines was unlucky as the one carrier shot down out of a bunch who all had lax risk management policies.

        • +3

@Cozdog: the list of airlines who were flying over Eastern Ukraine include Singapore, Lufthansa etc.
So please dont ever fly with them either

Also, why would Qantas fly that route? They route everything through Dubai, and as a result until about a week ago, were flying straight over ISIS controlled Iraq

        • +4

          @futurism:

Why are you erroneously assuming that I'm not going to fly with them? Where have I ever said that? That's a separate decision looking at the risk / reward payoff - even for me, at a low enough price the risk to fly with them may become potentially worth it.

I'm just saying that I disagree with people who think Malaysian airlines was blameless, and that they should be penalised for the decisions they made. Just because other airlines are equally negligent does not excuse Malaysian Airlines.

And yes, I would apply a risk premium to airlines with similarly lax risk management policies, for the same reason most people wouldn't travel with Garuda or Afghan airlines if Cathay or Etihad was available on the same route for the same price - airlines with better risk management are able to minimise the chances of disasters happening.

        • I really can't be bothered arguing about this anymore. In the last deal, the mods deleted the first comment along with the heated discussion.

why is Plasmapuff getting negged for saying the truth?

I am a little worried about buying the tickets and the airline going into insolvency… Checked a couple of travel insurances none of them covers event where airline goes into insolvency. Can anyone recommends a travel insurance that may cover this?

    • +4

There are a few providers that do:

QBE Insurance (covers up to the cost of the ticket/subject to limits)

      PDS is https://travel.qbe.com/qbe/QBETravel?document=true&documenti…

Travel Insuranz (requires Premier level insurance, covers up to $5k)

      PDS: http://www.travelinsuranz.com.au/icms_docs/170318_Product_Di…

and Commonwealth Bank Credit Card Complimentary Travel Insurance (might be useful if you have a CBA card that has complimentary insurance, also up to $5k)

    • Would you be be able to do a chargeback if you paid via credit card? As the service hasn't been provided?

I know you wouldn't be able to get the money back for prepaid hotels, tours, etc. but is this the type of circumstance where your credit card provider could cover you? (I have a NAB platinum card with the complimentary insurance and will call them tomorrow to check)

  • so i can get these prices starting now and next couple of months ???? the link u supplied shows dates in 2015 ??

    • +1

Yes, but i suggest you put in different day and see for yourself.

      Example http://www.kayak.com.au/flights/SYD-HKG/2014-09-23/2014-10-0…

      • thanks, so should i book through kayak or through Malaysia airlines or air Asia directly like i have read on other forums ??? whats your take

        • I have book through various website over the pass few years. Never had any problem.

Booking through the airline directly is usually more expensive. It is usually $20-$70 but you get a guarantee ticket. Thing can sometime go wrong booking through an online agent but the chance is very slim and i am a risk taker. I have not one bad experience yet.
I used directflight, cheapoair and zuji in the past. No problem with them. This will be my first time booking with travel.com.au but base on my previous experience with online booking then i would just suggest that you book the flight wherever it is the cheapest it.

    • I tried Hanoi for late October and got the listed price. 2 days ago it was costing almost $800, now $631.
I've been enquiring through Student Flights and they said the overnight in KL was completely free as well!

      Rubbish post.

    • I wouldnt say it isnt MAs fault - they chose to fly over a war zone to save fuel money. They demonstrated very poor judgement.

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/airline-safety-is-it-safer-to-f…

Two accidents and unfortunate and sad but some have to build a bridge and get over it and take a advantage of the cheap flights while its last, fuel not getting any cheaper.

MAL is a safe airline otherwise they wouldn't be able to fly in and out of the Australia, sometimes shit happens.

  • -6

    TOO RISKY..

  • +3

If you don't want to fly them or think it is to risky then don't book a ticket! we don't want to hear the crap again and again. To be honest don't fly them and us the ones who will fly them we will keep getting discounted tickets that are on sale!!!!

    • -8

if you don't like informed, educated decision, it is your right to book & fly with it.that doesn't mean other people in this community cannot make comments.

    • -4

If reminding people of the lack of value MA places on human life saves one persons life, then it was worth you having hear the same message over and over.

In what way is Malaysia Airlines* itself a joke? I am so sick of these uneducated comment's about MAS. Both Incidences MH370 & MH17 are a result of individuals not the airline and anyone flying on any airline in the world is at risk of either incidences happening again and many other possibility's.

Malaysia airlines is still rated by Skytrax a 5 star airline in the same category as Emirates.

MH370- Still classed as unknown, but the suggested pilot suicide case is out of any airlines control and could happen to any airline at anytime though rare. Air Algérie Flight 5017 that also crashed in July is being investigated as a deliberate act.
      - Egypt Air 990
      - SilkAir Flight 185
      - FedEX Flight 705
      - LAM Flight 470

MH17- Shot-down flying a open air corridor declared safe by the International Euro Control, A corridor almost all Asian carriers were flying at the time, Singapore Airline's B777 was only two minutes behind aswell as a Air India 787-8 from Delhi to Birmingham. And yes Qantas stopped flying that corridor "Months Ago" because months ago Qantas stopped flying from Australia to London via Singapore and now fly to London via Dubai. There is no one to blame in this incident except the person(Country) who committed the crime. Saying MAS is to blame for this incident is like placing blame on a girl for being raped because she was walking past someone.

All Shotdown by accident or mistaken identity
      - Aerolinee Itavia Flight 870
      - Korean Air Lines Flight 007
      - Iran Air Flight 655

I am so tempted to book to Malaysia's Langkawi Island, stayed there for our Honeymoon back in 1999, at the Tanjung rhu (http://www.tanjungrhu.com.my), and always meant to go back. 15 year anniversary this september would be good!

  • +3

Just booked return to Hanoi in 2 weeks !! only $606 woohoo

  • oMG need more annual leave

  • -1

Whether any Australian flies with MH or not we all seem to end up subsidising the disaster/recovery cost (via our taxes). May as well take advantage of the cheaper flights.

    • +2

I dont think anyone is concerned about the cost of disaster recovery.

  • Thanks champ!

  • -4

    Does airfare include life insurance?

  • +2

so many trolls, yes people we watch the news, its our decision what we do with our lives NOT YOURS

  • Sale is over already. Gutted (tried Brisbane to Hanoi, looked online and asked at Student Flights)

    • Yeah don't quite understand why people use travel agents (if they're budget conscious that is)

  • +1
