Traveling Japan - best way to withdraw money

Hi guys,

I am sure this has been posted before but I haven't seen anything on front page.

I am going to japan in 3months. And curious of the best way to with draw money. I used to have a bank west card which charged 0% but that has changed now :(

I am with common wealth bank and will also ask them :₩

    Get a citibank plus account
    http://www.citibank.com.au/aus/banking/everyday_banking/citi…

then withdraw from 7-11 atms pretty much everywhere in jp for free no transaction fee no bank fee

    • +1 Citibank Plus account with debit Visa. Totally fee free and you get the (very good) market exchange rate. Recently went to Japan and you can withdraw money from any 7-11 ATM (tons of them).

Only down side is if you intend to use the Citibank app to keep track of your money then set it up before you go, as it's a pain to get all the authentication SMS and other rubbish completed if you're overseas and using an overseas SIM.

Same applies to if you intend to use Citibank online banking whilst overseas - set up all the necessary codes before you go. Citibank online/app has a ridiculously over the top & clunky security policy.

        • citibank is great for accessibility but SUCKS when it comes to its online app. Had this problem when my partner and I went to America last year. I was smart enough to set everything up and he wasn't. Pain in the butt to keep track of money. Make sure you set it up while you're still in the country.
    • This is what we did the last two times we went, worked a treat.

    • Damn I always walk around Japan with a fat wad of cash in my money belt (exchange AUD to JPY at KVB Kunlun in Sydney) because I didn't know about this - I have a Citi plus account but I thought you had to find a Citi ATM for the free withdrawal.

Can you withdraw from any ATM overseas fee free with Citi or is there some sort of special partnership with 7-11 in Japan?

It's fee free anywhere around the world unless the ATM has its own fee (which it should notify you of if you try withdraw money). All the 7-11 ATM's in Japan don't have fees.

Dont bother. You'll never get anything out of them, Bankwest is their lower cost offering, and if they dont offer a deal, CBA wont be better.

Go with Citibank Plus, you can set it up online.

  • awesome tips guys!

Thanks ill have a look at citibank :)
