Western Digital Elements SE 1TB USB3.0 2.5" HDD $67 @ Officeworks

870

Some of the other deals for the same drive (at Harvey Norman, Bing Lee & JB HiFi) had made mention of this drive being sold at certain Officeworks stores. Well, it looks like it's up on the site now. Also saw it advertised on the front page of the catalogue which was delivered to my house today.

  • Any difference with My Passport?

    • +5

If I recall correctly, the My Passport line comes with "Smartware" that is built into the drive's firmware and is difficult/impossible to remove (although possible to hide), while the Elements line is just a big ol' empty hard drive.

When I see manufacturers putting bloatware on their products I want to:

        1. find them and scream in their face about how I can help them
        2. ask them if they want my help
        3. tell them they can't get rid of me
        4. ask them how they feel and help them realise how they are douches
    • Yes. from the dimension specs, almost the same.

Damn. now we can't do a 5% OW pricematch :/

    • +15

And the entire ozbargain community quietly weeps…Seriously, getting kinda ridiculous how everyone wants to pricematch OW for everything, even the small retailers trying their best.

      • +5

Sometimes it's not necessarily about getting it cheaper. It could simply be that it's more convenient to get it from Officeworks (or wanting the refund/exchange flexibility - which Officeworks has).

Besides, this price drop is to be competitive with Harvey Norman, Bing Lee & JB supposedly. Certainly not small retailers.

In the end, I'm not sure about you, but given the choice I would still like to pay 5% less for an item if possible. At the expense of a small retailer? Well, sorry, it's cheaper. I'm not buying things from a small retailer just for them to stay alive. Donate some money and ask nothing in return if that is your primary concern.

      • +1

it is not just about the money and but also about the after sale services. With OW, if you happen to change your mind, not require the item anymore, then you can easily return and exchange without a big harrasing on the sale man. It is simply a peace of mind that is of an extra. It is suitable for ozbargainers: "buy now, think later", then with OW: "don't need later, simply return".

Having said that, even if OW charges a little bit extra, then I am still willing to buy from them. If small retailers simply have the same policy as OW, then we can see that there is a level playing field.

I know that in the long term, they may gain monopoly and be able to charge a mucg higher price as a result of less competiiton, but, I guess it is not an issue for us as a consumer to worry about but for the small retailers.

A monopoly ramping up prices isn't an issue for consumers? Oh ok….

    • need to incite some xzibit philosophy on the OW employees so they'll work their magic on the register

Also includes free delivery. Beats the same deal delivered at Bing Lee by $2

  • Literally ordered 2x750's less than 30 minutes ago via ebay / paypal for 8$ more - god damn !
    Typical!
EDIT: can you cancel a buy it now, pay via paypal sale, get a refund from a seller?
EDIT2: I've been refreshing OzBargain regularly tonight several times too, unclear why it didn't appear on the front page beforehand :/

    • contact the seller and ask nicely.

      • I gave it a shot, I'd guess by the time he gets back to me - these puppies will be sold out.

        • If you miss out on these, you can still grab them from Bing Lee for $69.

        • I don't want to get stuck with 4 disks, I think once I've paid the ebay seller is in the green and it's up to his / her generosity. So we'll see what happens (I'm screwed) - could've done with the extra 250gb too.

          Thanks.

  • Thanks I bought one.

Will get one in-store tomorrow (and pay with my ING card of course, for 5% off)

Note these have the usb3 soldered onboard.. and have no sata connector..
if the usb interface screws up.. you've got almost no chance on trying to recover the data yourself..
Also these drives cannot be used internally in laptops

It may be worth paying a couple of dollars more for the security of a proper sata drive..

    • +1

Informative comment - that USB soldered onboard business has become the standard lately and bloody annoying.

    • +3

what are examples of drives with sata connector ?

    • -1

      Buy a soldering iron…

  • Hmmm, do i need another hard drive? This is very tempting…..

  • Thanks OP ! My son told me last night he needs a new hard drive, perfect timing.

  • I just bought the Bing Lee one the other day, but this is a bargain….

  • I bought this drive when it was closer to $100 and I'm very happy with it.

Only issue is I can't use the case for a larger drive as the connector is soldered.

  • +2

Don't forget to pick up one of these cases for $1 at the same time to protect your investment. Designed for western digital drives so fits perfectly for this external drive.

  • cheers .. got one

  • Hey guys,

Is this any good as a backup?

I'd like to use it to back up a Mac with Time Machine… Any idea if it'll work?

    • I bought one of these drives for that exact purpose for a family friend's computer. No issues at all for that purpose.

  • Auburn Officeworks keeps them in a cage behind the counter so ask for it; don't go looking on the shelf where there are none. I wandered around for 10 minutes before I decided to ask staff haha.
