Xbox One

So what do you guys think ? The console's design looked nice (certainly a lot better than the launch 360), and the media and internet connectivity was moderately impressive, but COD ghosts… Honestly, not that impressive.

The new kinect seems pretty cool. Though not being backwards compatible with older xbox games is a let down. Also the possibility of having to pay a fee for playing a used game.

As for used games, Microsoft will allow Xbox One owners to trade in and resell them, but additional reports have suggested secondary use of a game will require a fee.

  • +1

It doesn't set the world on fire and it really targets the older audience with the design and function, smart move .The whole second hand game debate will be a sticking point, I read also when you trade in the game and someone else installs it then it deactivates on your account

    • The problem is I think the older audience are getting over the whole thing. I don't expect this to be the best media player or the best game system and I don't expect I'll care about the new games, so why bother?

Teenagers has always been what drives the Xbox.

      • +5

Teenagers are driving the Android / iOS games. Serious gamers are driving the PC gaming / Steam box. MSFT, Sony, Nintendo can't just rely on exclusive titles any more so I think they are moving their new console to be the home entertainment centre, i.e. for the family rather than just a game console. If you are just going to have one device under your TV, Microsoft wants this to be the One.

        • I get the thoery, just don't accept that this will work.

Also I don't think that teenagers driving Android lessens their want/nagging for a gaming console, I see this as replacing the Gameboy market (which MS wasn't in anyway).

  • Confusing naming. When I first heard it this morning I thought it is somehow related to HTC One. Looking forward to more products branded as "the One"…

  • its suprisingly big, one would have thought they would go smaller

    • +1

It is meant to be rather powerful after all. Going smaller means more heat issues.

But I like the look. It has a professional AV setup kind of facade and will look prim and proper under a LCDTV. It sort of looks like a computer case designed by Silverstone for HTPC's.

      • Thats exactly what i was thinking, silverstone boy am i glad i stopped messing round with htpc's.

I guess i am one of those few minimilists, encouraged by the amount of crap i normally buy from here.

I guess technology has moved on from those times of things having to be chunky/big, maybe not so for microsoft.

Also powerfull, hmm seemingly most of what i saw on the demo you could do on a tablet, yet it is 10 times thicker.

        • I'd compare it more to a PC than a tablet.

The x86 processor will make it very easy to modify PC titles for, while tablets run Windows RTM, and only very few have discrete graphics at all…

I feel the chunky design is more for cooling, with a processor somewhat ahead of its time. If Microsoft follows their several year upgrade tradition, we'll see the internals become smaller, but processing power only start falling behind in a couple of years.

    • It's big so they can justify a 'slimmer' version coming to you next year.

      Hello planned obsoleteness….

  • I'm sure when it gets revised it will get smaller but the look is more grown up and would slot easily into someone's av setup. Depending on pricing and whether someone might want another blu ray player or media streamer i don't see much point but it's still early days

    • This. They are a bit late on the 'do all your media' bandwagon when smart TVs are almost impossible to avoid and android sticks are almost being given away.

  • +4

It looks like Xbox 80s Style - I expected it be backwards compatible with Betamax tapes

    • +1

That is exactly what I thought. It also isn't clear from the image, but the large vent at the top looks really bad for keeping it clean and keeping things out of it. And why is the Kinect thing so damn huge?

  • What a stupid name. Here was me thinking this was discussion about the original Xbox console first released back in 2001 and not the 3rd generation of the Xbox console.

Just as bad as Apple calling the latest Ipad and Iphone the NEW IPAD and NEW IPHONE.

    • Who cares what it's called. At the end of the day it will still just be called an Xbox

  • It's interesting where it will land with secondhand games. There's a huge market at the moment, but the rumour is that the games will be installed on to the hard drive, registered with Microsoft, and then they will be locked to your console.

Not a great result for those who like a bargain from the 2 for $40 table at EB games!

  • +2

NO matter what it will sell as will the PS4
Whether or not it will be the experience it is promised , well lets look at that in a few years

Ill buy one as long as my fellow Xbox friends buy one, which will depend on the Price at release
as well as the release titles

I remember I took a while to buy the 360 after owning the Xbox
but all of a sudden all my friends bought one within a few weeks of me buying a 360

I remember we could play our current Xbox games on the 360 , we wont be able to do that on the one
so there might be a slow change over if players are still wanting to play COD 2 etc

  • +1

I'm more interested in the new Kinect and using it with my PC. Hopefully software is made to use it.

  • So it seems that not always online means you still have to connect it once a day or you get locked out.

Also the used game fee was misreported - You cannot sell/trade the disc. You will be able to trade games somehow within the xbox account system - completely cutting out retailers, and controlling the price.

Possibly the biggest change for the average gamer is there is no way to lend games between friends.

  • 400 GBP to pre order from Zavvi - works out to about 600 AUD at current prices, or likely a little more depending on when your credit card actually gets charged.

Not the worst idea, given that if memory serves me right, the 360/PS3 were $800+ at release

Update: Microsoft says you can trade in and resell games. Doesn't reveal how and whether it costs money to do so though.

So what this essentially kills is video game lending and renting. If you can't pop in a disk and start playing without installing, this puts the traditional concept of a used game into the bin.

  • If this happened then it would be awesome

I really just don't get the whole media centre angle both Sony and Microsoft are going for with the new consoles. They wont even be able to do what a $70 WDTV from Officeworks can currently do right now, especially in terms of playing a vast array and range of media types.

Like most people, I just want the fucking console to play games & I dont give a shit about facewank, nor will I be leaving these hunking pieces of overheating noise machines on for prolonged periods of time just to watch TV shows or movies.

    • +1

To be fair to Sony, they pushed this with the PS3 but not so much with the PS4. They worked out that people didn't buy a PS3 for this reason, even though the PS3 had the great draw card of being an early blu-ray player. XBox has… nothing really.

    • +6

Particularly given that content restrictions means that a bunch of the features are useless in Australia.

    • If they did with the software what Western Digital Did with their WDTV box it would be great as in the technical interview after the live presentation there technical team mentioned that the chips are designed in a way that it only uses the power it needs. So you use it for tv shows and movies it'll probably use 80% less power. Then I thought maybe not that much because they have made it so everything is running at the same time being able to instantly load a game or tv station and they just bring it to the front. Like photoshop layers, put it behind it's still their and loaded into memory and move it to the top it doesn't need to load as it has already been loaded.

But yeah I hate the way Microsoft and Sony have made their media centers in the past. With PS3 it has cinetiva and all these limits and with both systems I believe you are limited to DLNA. Where as with WDTV you can use a windows network shared folder which is much more useful than DLNA for me anyways :)

this pretty much sums up the Xbox One:
    http://i.imgur.com/6d8fJiJ.jpg

Looks like the PS4 might be the eventually winner of this generation of console wars.

….. unless someone else comes into the market

    • +2

….. unless someone else comes into the market

      SeeeeGuuuuuhhhh

I jest. Perhaps the Steambox will make it's debut later this year and topple the Xbox market.

  • +3

I think this guy said it best.

  • +2

I have been a xbox user since the begining but if they make you pay extra for secondhand games, i will be buying a PS4(as long as they don't do it as well)

  • Won't buy the PS4 and XBOX One if above $500.

  • +1

Consoles are overpriced I highly recommend you to build your own gaming rig instead of investing a console for $900.

  • +7

I don't know why Nintendo doesn't just release a 3ds version of pokemon yellow and sit back and profit.

  • +1

    its an overpriced tv box

  • meh….

  • -3

Good to see Microsoft show off there new HARDWARE

Not sure about the TV addon, Will Australia get one ? Wait and see ! Media Centre for Xp Vista and Win 7 / 8 never had an official EPG from Microsoft !

Not worried about the second hand game issue as NOTHING has been finalised and I am sure plenty of game resellers are talking to MS right now about the rumours, no matter what is resolved I would still buy one

I tried the PS3 and did not like it so but does that mean I wont buy a PS4 NO , If I like it Ill buy 1

The hardware looks amazing and Xbox Live is fantastic and only gets better , happy to pay for a service that delivers !

I am not sure Ill use Skype, but I don't use the video chat version of Skype anyway as it is!

    • -6

Why would anyone neg this ?

  • Its like HTC One, M$ wants XBOX to be THE ONE

  • -2

Gimmicks motion camera with gimmick voice command like Siri. Anti-consumerism with no second hand games and another internet paywall for LIVE. Anti-indie friendly corporation that doesn't give out free devs kit and piss poor policy. A wannabe game console trying TOO hard to also be a TV box, NFL , Hulu , Neflix etc. they won't be available in Australia. Non-upgradable internal hdd.

All this is also at the expense of being weaker and non-cutting edge than the PS4. Plus the box is HUGE for something that was suppose to be NEXT GEN. The marketing team is also an complete retard for not using a higher number than ONE. They went back 359 step from the X360. This console going to FLOP like an abrupt abortion.

    • -3

All this is also at the expense of being weaker and non-cutting edge than the PS4.

The rest of your comments are reasonable, but we don't have enough information to justify this comment one way or another.

  • -4

Have people already forgotten about illumiroom? You won't be getting that from Sony.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=re1EatGRV0w

    • -1

Another gimmick for a gimmick already there? Yep sure.

      • You're a bit bitter. I won't feed your fire, as you have a closed mind.

    • I like the idea here but noticed that it was completely missing from this launch. You might not get it from an Xbox either.

    • A more realistic take on why you'd never use that feature:
      http://www.cracked.com/quick-fixes/4-reasons-youd-never-use-…

    • Ray Bradbury would approve

    • No one gives a shit. Sorry to disappoint.
How about something useful like playing 2nd hand games?
How about something even more useful like not having to get your XBone on the internet every 24 hours?
      Oh wait… PlayStation 4.

  • +1

Not really interested, for the gaming side of the things I'll have a PS4(providing Sony don't screw it up at E3) and for the media side of things I already have an HTPC running XBMC which does everything I need it to and more. Things like Kinect and Illumiroom don't interest me in the slightest.

    • They're marketing the X-1 as a HTPC alternative, to those who don't want to build a HTPC or purchase an X86 solution to serve as a HTPC.

They're also trying to beat Apple (TV) , Google and Sony to the punch in the IPTV/Smart TV market.

Now that the X1 runs on X86 hardware, I think it's quite likely that Microsoft will work on a wide variety of codec and video format support on the xbox through future software upgrades.

  • If they can provide cheaper games, then I'll be satisfied.

Who am I kidding? It's never going to happen! QQ

  • +1

I couldn't care less about the name. Does anyone remember the name reveal of the Wii? Good lord. Wii. Penny Arcade had a better name.

But in the end no-one cared.

The reveal was dull as all get-up too. Online features and inbuilt Kinect and harder hardware. What an amazing surprise. Build in the features that've been upgrades to the current gen and make it faster? Amazing.

As someone else said: it'll sell. The announcement is irrelevant. Hell, the release is irrelevant. The only thing that'll matter is if it brings in good titles and continues to develop it's software in it's first couple of years.

  • Looks like one of those old dvd/vcr combos that they had years ago.

  • +3

Initially, I was quite excited, but this Tumblr post is pretty discouraging.

    http://rangerkimmy.tumblr.com/post/51254774240/angelfire93-a…

A lot of it is speculation, but it still tamped down my interest.

  • U$499, I wonder what that means for us…

    • Well it launching at 429GBP in the UK. So I'm betting on something around the $700AUD mark here.

  • Damn. Lets see what sony prices their console at. Either way, im not paying more than 450$ for a next gen console, so I'll probably be waiting for mid-late 2014.

    EDIT:

    http://www.kotaku.com.au/2013/06/we-have-an-australian-price…

Apparently it will be about 599AU$. Which to be honest, isnt TOO bad. Compared to how we normally get shafted. Now, too bad we will be shafted by Microsoft's Draconian DRM and Kinect issues.

  • Time to look at PS4 mate! :)

Completely and royally owned the Xbone. You could always buy one from overseas for $399 and ship it across. PS4 doesnt have region locking and stuff (AFAIK).

    • PS4 doesnt have region locking and stuff (AFAIK).

You are just guessing, no one knows. Blu-ray locking is very likely.

      • Blu-Ray Locking is a definite I'd say. Region free for games has been confirmed by Sony though. So it's much like this gen with the PS3.

  • +3

Yeah, even as an xbox fan, I gotta say, the PS4 completey smashed it. Sure, ill miss forza 5 and the exclusives, but honestly, the PS4 is looking SO much better. At the very least, this as an easier decision than the previous generation … >_>

  • WHAT WERE YOU THINKING MICRO$SOFT!!! $599 AUS RRP VS PS4 $549 AUS RRP???. HOW DOES THAT COMPUTE. MICRO$OFT YOUR CONSOLE PRODUCE LESS GIGAFLOP THEN THE PS4 BUT WANT TO CHARGE MORE THAN THE PS4? M$ should be charging less.

  • I actually think that microsoft is going to go good with their service. But I must admit that the PS4 will be getting more sales. I'm going to get an Xbox one because I trust microsoft to fix issues or at the least compensate for the problems. For example, GOLD members will get 2 free games every month, that will raise their fan base.

    • For example, GOLD members will get 2 free games every month

..that you pay for with membership fees. Not exactly 'free'.

    • +1

Gold members won't be getting two free XBOne games. They're giving 2 free 360 games(first month both games are about 4 years old) out. There's nothing in there about XBOne games.

  • +3

Why would anyone want to pay more money to buy a console that has DRM restriction, doesn't support used games and has a camera spying your every movement?

  • Even though the DRM and online check thing have been cancelled, the XboxOne is still 100$ dearer than the PS4.
