Any Haggle Room on Dealership Used Cars at The Moment?

Junior needs to replace his 18 year old car, not sure if it's worth buying new and then there's the wait times. Has anyone gone used car shopping at a dealership lately? Were you able to haggle a deal?

Might consider private sales as well but it's easier to deal with trade ins at dealerships. :)

It’s a weird time in the car market right now.

If you’re looking for a reasonably recent model, then it makes sense to buy new (if you can afford the wait).

Heat is coming out of used cars a little though so you might be able to negotiate with a dealer

With all the immigrants coming into the country right now demand for used cars is high.

But that demand is aimed at the cheaper end of the market.
That would benefit OP selling Junior's 18 year old car privately and get a good price.

Now that new cars are being delivered more promptly, the "near new" used car market is getting better.

I dont think the number of immigrants is the sole reason for demand in lower end cars. Financial pressures on people is the main reason immigrants, backpackers, fruit and vegetables pickers etc to a smaller degree.

Surprised people negged you though but there are a lot of people who cant handle any negative mention of immigration.

        • +2

Neg is probably becasue its a right wing anti immigration talking point not anything grounded in reality.

Immigration is a complex topic, but blaming immigrants for stuff is not typically done by people with any real knowledge on the matter.

@Euphemistic: Living in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, I see it every day where I live.
I see new migrants all over the place (and pick up on all the Irish accents everywhere too).
            Hence I am speaking factually.
Not living in a fantasy world or listening to all the propaganda on the "government approved" news

I also have a university degree in marketing and economics which does give me the qualifications to provide informed comment on such matters

And its pretty obvious even to those less qualified that New migrants are taking up rentals, used cars and everything else.
This makes the market much more competitive and so pushes up prices.

And so there is why we have inflation issues all over the place.

            • @HeWhoKnows: User name checks out.

                @Euphemistic: Who are you?

                The OB policeman?

How about you just stick with "the facts" of the matter

            • -1

              @HeWhoKnows: Here we go again.
neg voting the cold hard facts.

              I got news for you.
You may not like the cold hard facts but you cannot change them by neg voting them.

              • @HeWhoKnows: No worries. If these are 'cold hard facts', back it up with evidence. Otherwise you just sound like a know it all.

But but but they’ve got a degree, why won’t you just bow down now @Euphemistic?

                • -3

@Euphemistic: What a load of Rubbish!!!!!!!!!!!!

seriously. Like you know what you are talking about.

Mate Ive already justified my comments and the words are not coming out of my back side like many others here.

You are obviously envious of my superior education, home location and experience.

                  And you?
Havent seen anything from you (ever) backed by evidence so best you lead by example or keep your wonderful advice to yourself.

                  • @HeWhoKnows: Im terribly sorry. I must bow down befroe your degree.

Ive added plenty of evidence to other threads. My evidence here is that there is no immigration problem. There arent many immigrants from what I can see ergo it doesnt drive up prices.

See how that sounds? Sure bro, just trust me.

Now, your statement is purely backed by your opinion that there are lots of immigrants in your area. How is that evidence that used car pri es are high? At best correlation, not casuation without further evidence.

  • I have recently bought a used car (couple of weeks ago).

2017 Tucson Manual with 120k. List price was about 23k. Traded in my 2010 manual Mazda 2 with 200k on the clock and what felt like a dying clutch and iffy ignition. Got the Tucson for 19k which I'm happy with.

The Mazda 2 is potentially worth a little more but I also don't have to risk it breaking down.

Holy Molly… 7 year old 120k Manual car for 19k. What a time we live in.

    • +1

that car was about $30K when new and you paid $19K for it being 7yrs old

  • This is probably a question for @Spaceback

Depends on when the used car was traded/brought by the dealer.

    • +4

I think you meant @spackbace or as we affectionately like to refer to them as… "sassmouth"

      • +1

Probably more likely to get a reply from him using sassmouth than @Spaceback 🫣

        Ironically, this was posted yesterday

  • I've heard the used car market prices are starting to drop. Might be able to haggle a bit more, but if you can wait a bit longer you might get an even better deal. The problem will be is if the dealers have bought at a higher price and haven't sold yet, no one wants to lose money!

  • OK cheers, yeah there's no mad rush to replace the old one. Just thought it might be prudent while it's still running ok.

    • +1

Yeah, there are more cars on carsales, and boats on boatsales…

The cars I am constantly looking at are coming off the boil and have been since 12 months ago.

  • I’ve been looking at some cars I like on car sales, used to see if the market is good, and I’ve noticed around half the cars I’ve saved to my list have dropped the price between $500 - $1500 so used car makers definitely room to haggle. New car and dealerships not to sure.

  • +2

Theres always haggle room on a used car. Exactly how much depends on a range of factors. How long its been in the yard. How much interest it had. How keen the salesman and business is to make a sale. End of (time period) approaching or just started. If youve got a trade in or not. Even if the sales person likes you or not or is having a good or bad day/week.

  • used cars in Brisbane are returning to pre-covid prices.

two of my kids have needed cars in the last 18 months so I've been looking out

  • Thanks all.

  • It depends on the popularity of the car. A RAV4 hybrid won't have much room for haggling. A grey import Toyota from a dealer can be bargained down quite a bit as they are slow to sell and have a lot of margin in them.

    • What's a grey Toyota import?

      • An imported second hand car.

  • Like othes have said, it is depend on type of cars, model etc..Ive recently purchased a Toyota Certified Used Kluger with 1 year of manufacturer warranty. Talked to 8 dealers but they dropped their interest whenever I lowered 1k from of their listed price (close to 40k). Finally price I got is 900$ off their RRP

  • not sure if it's worth buying new

Depends on the make model. For most cars you can haggle on the price. maybe for tesla and toyota you cant!…

  • +1

There is always haggle room, and if there isn't. Walk away.

Buying new is more expensive in almost every case, get a 5 year old Lexus or something. Highly reliable, high depreciation, not particularly sort after and nice cars all around (much nicer finish them the Toyotas they're based on)

As someone who buys, fixes and sells cars as a very occasional hobby, the current market is very skewed towards buyers. Don't buy from a car yard, all they do is buy cars from auctions, clean them and add 5k. Facebook is the best place, be sure to check th seller isn't a dodgy unlicensed used car dealer (minimum 50% cars on Facebook are) just check their profile, it's also full of scammers. Anything price between 5-10k if you go on carsales and see they should be 15-20+ straight up scam.

Gumtree is pretty good now to, now they charge for ads there is alot less trash on there.

    • Thanks, I'm not sure junior is too keen on another 2nd-hand car now. He might hold off till the end of the year and get a Camry Hybrid.
