Bad take - you're comparing apples and broccoli here

      • +9

Apples and broccoli goes nice with my lamb and tunafish. 🥩 🐟

    • +4

Bonza failed to make payments on their leased aircraft, hence the repossession. There is no chance of this happening to Jetstar or Qantas as the tax payer will always bail them out (plus they own many of their aircraft).

You seem to forget what AirNZ did to Ansett….

(Also, Qantas is privately owned… Not government owned…)

        • +3

Ansett was never offered the same protection or status as Qantas, hence the NZ sell off. AirNZ did what they had to do to survive themselves (not that I would ever fly with them). The market is also deregulated now, hence things are alittle different.
          RIP Ansett

          • -1

            @Froot Loops:

AirNZ did what they had to do

Yes, stole stripped off the assets before bankrupting Ansett…

            Don't think for a minute it wouldn't happen again…

        • Also, Qantas is privately owned… Not government owned

well they're public (as in a public company on the ASX) and funded by the taxpayer.

          https://www.theguardian.com/business/2021/jul/22/qantas-on-t…

          • @M00Cow:

            and funded by the taxpayer.

Are referring to the COVID payments?

What taxpayer funds are they receiving now ?

            • @jv: well ~1/4 of the $2.7b was jobkeeper bailout (effectively Govt sponsored redundancy, not jobkeeper) The rest was a bailout. whilst they get more tax deductions then tax paid.

Go visit the Canberra Qantas pub, plenty of Govt subsidies there.

and blocking the increased capacity of competitors is effectively a govt subsidy.

              • @M00Cow: What taxpayer funds are they receiving now ?

According to your argument, pretty much every Australian company and business is taxpayer funded because they received jobkeeper, so moot point…

      • Anyone remember Compass? Or Compass Mk II?
Australia does not have the market to support an additional airline.
We SHOULD be trying to get customer rights like Europe has. No more $79 fares with $70 change fees (plus fare diff) thank you jetstuh.

Wow.. surprised to see all the Christmas love - wonder why it's not blackout dates for then like usual?!

    • I'm a bit confused though, because when I went to search for deals in December the specials seemed to end (not start) on 8th December. Anyone been able to book for Christmas?

  • +1

Yeah nice - travel from Perth in the past!

Japanese yen is crashing which makes it a cheap holiday destination.

    • +5

Yep i just got back from a jetstar japan vacation and must admit its good place to visit at the moment.

Pro tip. If you want sushi go to Sushiro. Its a japanese sushi chain that all the locals go to. Bang for buck.

      • +2

Is it westernised sushi…? Sushi is very different over there, so some people may get a shock.

        • +1

They have some rolls but mostly Nigiri.

Tuna and Salmon being the most common fish.

Its catered to the locals. I went pretty much every day and there are quite a few tourists there as well.

          Delicious.

      • +1

Or find a stand up sushi place. No queues and an interesting experience

  • Is Jetstar getting better? In 2022 I got delayed for 3 hours at Sydney airport, flew to Vietnam..

    • +1

I have flown to 4 international destinations with them and found them always on time.

      • +1

was that before Covid? I flew them to Phuket and Vietnam before Covid, it was on time.
But in 2022-2023, the issue from Jetstar went to the roof, delay, chaos..

    • Huge improvement over the situation a year ago. Similar delay/cancellation numbers to other major airlines: https://www.bitre.gov.au/statistics/aviation/otp_month

      • +1

Huge improvement over the situation a year ago

        For 1 month?

        • you said that last month too. And the previous one. They've been doing great for a while now.

          • +1

            @beatthatflight:

They've been doing great for a while now.

You only provided stats for 1 month.

Are you on some kind of commission from them?

    • I just returned from Melbourne (to Adelaide) on Saturday afternoon on Jetstar and was waiting 50 mins just to bag drop. The delay apparently was caused by massive congestion of flights around the 1:30pm to 4pm slots, so they just could not cope with the amount of luggage going through the system at Tullamarine. Of course flight was delayed by about 30 mins too. By comparison we have also experienced delays over the last 2 years with Virgin and Rex, so not only Jestart with issues, but they seem to cop more flack as more people fly with Jetstar (apparently) domestically than any of the others.

  • +2

Still cheaper on their last sale. I paid $270 return to Bali from Adelaide for November

    • Difference is that June is School Holidays and November is off-peak

      • +1

November is better time to go - less busy

  • Just here for the Bonza comments….

  • Seems odd, but the city pairing I was checking HVB-MEL is on sale but for flights not for travel until next year even though JQ is celebrating this years birthday.

  • Booking flights, shows first flight dollar amount $589, return flight is $0.00, go to pay, shows full fares for both flights $1,200. So obviously not $0.00

    • Do you have club jetstar?
And you're not selecting 2 people instead of one?
Only things I can think of.

    • you have be logged into your Club Jetstar account, if you don't have one, either sign up or wait till tomorrow for everyone else sale. This is the early sale for CJ members

      • +1

Yeah rebooted laptop and logged back in and bingo, worked

  • +4

Thanks OP, I appreciate your great posts here.

$48 for me and the wife using Qantas points

    • Do you think it is good value to redeem QFF for jetstar?I am tossing whether I should buy it out right or using the points. Looking to depart a few days before the Oct school holiday however it seems none of the sales is going to cover it. Price is showing 700~one way from Syd. Maybe better to use points?

    • Which destination?

  • Not bad, but by the time i add the jetstar membership for $65 and pick a fare with the 20kg luggage, I'm only saving a couple hundred at best and limited to certain dates.

    • but now you have the membership for 12 months to use for other discounted flights. If you don't want to do the membership, wait till tomorrow and purchase with everyone else but pay full price for baggage and seats….might work out a little cheaper if you won't be booking anymore Jetstar flights over the next 12 months

    • My club Jetstar renewal was $55, and comes with a $50 hotel voucher.
Bit hard to say no really.

  • Is the Return for Free sale available for non-Jetstar Club members or only Jetstar Club members?

It says early access so from tonight does the public get the same flights on sale?

    • Early access is until 11:59pm tonight. Sale opens to public from midnight.

  • +1

Wish they had direct flights from Sydney to Tokyo!

    • You get ANA and JAL direct, no need for Kusostar.

  • I am thinking about buying a flex ticket - about $100 more expensive than a starter ticket.
If I have to change a date of travelling, do I only pay the difference in the price?

    • thats the idea, but if you buy a free return, i guess the price difference would be significant.

      • I will be buying a flex ticket for the first trip and a starter for the return ($0).

      • Their terms and conditions makes me confused.
Looking at their comparison chart, it looks like I can change the date, and I know I am expected to pay the difference in fares.
I wonder if I need to pay any extra fee like change fee on top?

        • +2

You just pay the fare difference although sometimes it doesn't let you change into cheap sale fares. The system might force you to buy the next fare level up.

          • @capslock: Thank you for the info.
I’ve never bought flex tickets, so it’s good to know:)

  • -1

    Any Mel to aukland

  • After the presale is finished, is it the same prices for both non-Jetstar Club members and Jetstar Club members?
    Across all fare types? (Starter,Flex,Plus,Max)

Just wondering if it's worth holding out to buy at midnight to save the $65

    • No. Club Jetstar exclusive fares (in purple) will continue to exist after the presale but the savings is usually only around $10

  • Can't complain for $808 for 3 people to fly to Bali (return) including 40kg of luggage both ways.

  • does this apply to business class?

  • +1

Oh, OP list was not exhaustive. It didn't list Sydney to Honolulu return, which is included in the sale, as well as some travel periods for other destinations. https://www.jetstar.com/au/en/deals/birthday-sale?dealsorig=…

  • I can't seem to find any fares with free return from Melbourne to Osaka between 17 Sept and Oct 2
I didn't see any last night either for club Jetstar is anyone else having any luck?
    Tha ks in Advance

  • +1

Can't seem to find any return flights MEL to BALI in Feb - Mar :(

    • There are still single seats left

  • +1

Booked in flights for Brisbane to Osaka return for $1348 for 3 people including reserved seats and credit card fee for a 2 week holiday in Sept. Was cheaper to chuck in Club Jetstar membership overall too. I think that was a pretty decent deal. Looked at using my Qantas points, but at 0.5c per point it wasn't worth it.

    • Also booked same route for 3 but no reserved seats. Ended up paying $1213 for return flights in August.

  • Very interested in Japan, especially due to the currency exchange. Never been, don't know much about it. Which airport should I book for the best tourist spots with family? More interested in scenics and fam activities. And economical too perhaps?
Will explore details later after booking flights.
Will stock up on some Yen.

  • Just booked a holiday to Bali after term 4 before Christmas, great deal!

  • +1

It's all crap, at least domestically. I have gone through multiple dates/times and to get the free return (at least with Adl -> Syd) you have to be willing to travel late at night to get there and do 2 stops on the way back.. They make it so difficult to get anything decent.

  • Friend and I secured a return flight for $324 each to South Korea. No idea what to do there besides the temples, the markets and mainly, the DMZ.

  • Thanks op.. 2 return tickets ex melb to mcy..$228.
