How many trees did they cut for 1 book?

      • Is that because you print it out @jv ? ;)

        • @jv, nice try to ask us to buy it 😂

Maybe it’s like LP? Trendy to use old technology? Waiting to see hipsters driving with Refidexs on their laps.

    • but a street directory doesn't need internet or power. it just works, also if you can't navigate a map you shouldn't be using gps till you have learnt

Is this a joke? Somebody photoshopped a 2004 edition?

    • Don’t be silly. There wasn’t any streets in 2004. We all road horses on trails.

    • My mobile is with Telstra, so heaps of black spots around Sydney.

Plus there's no such thing as UBD cameras, whereas if you touch your phone…

      • GPS still works, isnt it?

      • +2

Actually the book could be classed as a distraction because it’s taking your attention off the road

Maps lets you download the whole city to work offline.
And you need to mount the phone in a holder. Better than a paper map in your lap.

        • My mobile phone broke during my last bushwalk and my wife's phone couldn't lock onto GPS signals reliably because we were surrounded by tall trees. No mobile signal either.

Luckily I brought along a paper map as backup, otherwise we'd have been stuck in the middle of nowhere with no GPS and no way of knowing which direction to head.

          • -1

@greenie4242: Paper map can also be useless in tall trees. Or if it rains. How did you determine location?
Next time, take a proper GPS unit also. :)
A phone is no substitute there. But in a car none of that applies.

Reaching towards the backseats for the UBD/ refidex. Memories

These books were only good for locating a particular address which can be done with any app. For route planning or just “getting your head around” the area there was too much page flipping and you were better with a simple fold out map of main roads.

  • No bargain. It's been $35 for ages. I've been eyeing it off for a while to replace my 2009 one. So no deal until it's cheaper. As someone said, good as a backup, but not a $35 backup..😂

    • +1

Assuming you bought yours for $35 in 2009, that'd be $50.70 in today's money. So technically, this is a bargain. Another way to look at it would be that the $35 you spend today would've been worth $24.16 back in the day (2009).

That takes me back to 1987, a most frustrating time arguing with a partner in the car like, 50 times a week over directions

I could not imagine even beginning to open one of those things up in the 21st century. Surprised they even make them still.

For the boomers who dont have a smartphone

      • I don't think you can even buy a phone that's not capable of maps in one form or other. With the shutdown of 3G network, anything more than about 6 years old won't work.

      • +2

For the boomers who dont have a smartphone

It's not the boomers - it's the silent generation who's phones aren't large enough to read the tiny details on the map.
Or maybe they just prefer the 'good old way'.

I don't get the ongoing sniping at boomers here now - they are not the cause of all of the ills of the world, no matter how much the media love to spin it, and how much many here like to find an easy target for their supposedly humourous comments.

You just popped the new Blink-182 CD in your mom’s car as she takes you to get the new Mario and Spider-Man games. You’re on your way to a sleep over with your mates and you’re sitting passenger side navigating with bargain price ‘ Sydney Blue Mountains Street Directory 2024 ’

Life is good. The year is 2024 and you are 35 years old.

    • +2

Last line got me good, and then I realised I sort of have this arrangement for a few weeks ahead. My mate is bringing his toddler over to my place for a sleepover with my kids. He gets the guest room. We have nachos and some booze for a low stress night.

  • I was looking to Update my uncles GPS from the 1998 version thanks

Just a heads up that this edition was released in early August 2023, so expect the new 2025 edition to be released in just over 2 months time and for a similar price

  • “With all this information included in the latest edition now is the ideal time to replace your old directory”. I threw my last directory out. Does this upgrade check for the existing media first??

  • Student monitor stand for $35

  • Still got my 2003 version
Dno if belong to musuem now or

    • I've got a year 2000 one in our year 2000 built car, RETRO
      .

    • Whoa you can get it for $33.25 using this hack.
The demand of these might make our Sydney roads busier.. how will we regular drivers cope with the influx.

Zoomers know how to get from A to B with their fancy phones - they just have no idea where B is or was or in fact where TF they are - they just know that their machine will get them back to A again.

      Trust your GPS?

      85km location error

      Blue Mountains dead end

In this case it probably would have helped with that Blue Mountains error.

I believe too many people are blindly trusting whatever information is presented to them (this applies to news, forums, reviews etc as well as maps).

    • Zoomers actually drive? I thought they scooted most places and Uber the rest. Driving is no cap too hard.

I remember using one of these in the year nineteen dickety two. We had to use the word dickety because the kaiser had stolen our word for twenty…
