Problem is no way to buy higher ram models

    • exactly the same problem to me - I am toying the idea between M3 max 14 CPU/30 GPU with 96GB vs 16 CPU/40 GPU with 64GB…

    • +4

And that's the crux of the issue. 8gb is really only enough for light web browsing or word processing. Any kind of serious photo/video/programming work requires at least 16gb although 32gb i recommended.

      • -6

I've found if someone can explain their workload that needs over 8GB, they need over 8GB. Anyone who thinks they need it because they have 16GB on a Windows machine generally doesn't, because memory management it so much better.

My partner has an 8GB M1 machine which worried me, as she does digital art and photo touchups, lots of browsing, plays a few games. 3 years later, it's still fine, she has a 16GB M2 mbp too but doesn't notice the difference. Once the laptop "feels" faster than the mini it'll be time to upgrade, but that seems a long way off.

        • Quite possibly so, I think the optimised SOC and memory bus has alot to do with it. I'm still a bit sore about the poor thermals of the late/last generation Intel Macbook Pros.
The machines themselves are still fairly decent on paper, but you plug them into a 4k or 5k display and even browsing the web they start heating up and slowing down.

          • -1

@Commodore64: Yeah, Apple going away from Intel was a no-brainer, but that's all about having top to bottom control and what you can do with that.

Apple improved memory management in a lot of ways. Because they control the whole software/hardware stack, they make better use of shared memory between applications, swap memory which is assured very fast storage to sit on (unlike windows, where it might be spinning rust), virtual memory (which is different in macOS, it's memory the software wants allocated to it but instead of taking up a chunk of RAM the OS hands it over when needed) and much better memory compression thanks to the low latency to RAM.

It's all just using really fast hardware to improve their margins, 8GB simply doesn't look enough so they screw people over on going to 16GB, but the technical side is actually quite neat.

8gb is really only enough for light web browsing or word processing

Which is what 95% of use cases are.

  • +6

    8GB RAM? Yuck.

  • Apple event on Tuesday… you may own the older model in 3 days time

    • +7

It’s an iPad announcement event on Tuesday

  • Would this be fine for using simple web based applications for work. Not resource intensive (no coding etc, just using basic CRM software for customer accounts etc)

    • -1

      Yes.

    • -1

These would be fine for 99% of people. Unless you are a photographer, video editor, 3d modeller. 8GB seems stingy but to be fair on macOS it's completely fine for 99% of the population. If you need it for work just customise one online and write it off on tax. Pre simples. Maybe only catch is certain software that doesn't work well natively on arm.

In short they eat that type of stuff up that you would be doing.

      • -1

Most software works on ARM now. That was only an issue while software was gradually getting updated to work on Apple silicon. But it's pretty much a non-issue now.

      • -4

Lol through that line of reasoning any x86 laptop configured for power saving is perfectly fine for 99% of people. The best part is you can pay 1/2 the price (1/4 the price if buying used) for basically the same thing AND double the ram.

People who overpay for overpriced Apple rubbish have no clue. You refuse to even try anything other than Mac.

        • +1

Lol through that line of reasoning any x86 laptop configured for power saving is perfectly fine for 99% of people.

Not if they already participate in the Apple ecosystem and everything else just works straight out of the box.

You refuse to even try anything other than Mac.

I don't use Apple, but I'm mature enough to accept that their products appeal to a lot of people. The seamlessness of the ecosystem is unmatched in any competitor product. Feel free to nominate one you think is comparable.

            @1st-Amendment:

Not if they already participate in the Apple ecosystem and everything else just works straight out of the box.

Something superficial like this would only be valid if Apple products were competitively priced. Paying more than double for inferior hardware for the "ecosystem" is a joke. Explain to me what you can do on a Mac that you can't do on an x86 machine. I'll give you Final Cut and Logic for certain use cases, but they are garbage on 8GB ram.

Everything else just works out of the box

Meaningless statement. Any laptop works out of the box these days. What part of Windows 10 or 11 doesn't work out of the box? I'll wait.

I don't use Apple, but I'm mature enough to accept that their products appeal to a lot of people

It's all vanity appeal for people who don't know any better, and judge computers by their aesthetics.

Feel free to nominate one you think is comparable.

No, the onus is on you to demonstrate how MacOS sets itself apart from modern Windows, or better yet, the wide array of Linux distributions that the x86 platform supports.

The only real objective advantage Macbooks and MacOS has over the x86 platform is battery life, but that doesn't come remotely close to justifying the premium.

              @SvcKpc:

Explain to me what you can do on a Mac that you can't do on an x86 machine.

Don't need to. Some people prefer fish others like chicken. Why are you so upset about this?

Any laptop works out of the box these days

I see you deliberately snipped the word 'ecosystem' from my quote… Your lazy attempt at misdirection won't work here.
If you already have an Apple laptop, iPhone, iPad, AppleTV, Airtags etc, why would you then go and buy a Windows machine that won't work with it any of it?

No, the onus is on you…

I'll take that as confirmation that you can't provide a comparable alternative.

that doesn't come remotely close to justifying the premium.

A Windows laptop competitor to Apple might be something like a Dell XPS or Microsoft Surface which cost similar money, but neither have the ecosystem integration like Apple. The fact that this upsets you so much says more about you than anyone else.

You keep missing the point of a bargain website.

I see you deliberately snipped the word 'ecosystem' from my quote… Your lazy attempt at misdirection won't work here.

No this is just you whinging and attempting to backpedal.

If you already have an Apple laptop, iPhone, iPad, AppleTV, Airtags etc, why would you then go and buy a Windows machine that won't work with it any of it?

Thank you for proving you have absolutely no idea whatsoever. iPhone won't work with a Windows Machine? LOL

I'll take that as confirmation that you can't provide a comparable alternative.

No champ, you are the one who made the vague and utterly foolish claim that the "Apple ecosystem is seamless and unmatched" without going into any detail. Again, you clearly have no idea, and don't understand anything about this technology at all. Stop attempting to con people when you can't explain simple stuff.

People who overpay for overpriced Apple rubbish have no clue. You refuse to even try anything other than Mac

It’s their choice if they want to overpay. You are arguing
“Why would someone buy a German car when any other car does the same for less money”.
Why travel to country x when you can visit country y for 1/4 money”

It’s because their money, their choice.

@Commenter: Ok, so don't post these embarrassing """deals""" on a site called Ozbargain.

@SvcKpc: A deal is a deal when you can get it cheaper than regular price.

Are all the Tesla, Garmin, etc. deals embarrassing deals too?

If that's your basis for an argument, you should also stop making embarrassing comments.

      • Why can’t I just order one of these and claim it on tax?

    • +1

@31mop Way more than enough. It's not as weak a machine as you might think.

  • -2

Genuinely embarrassing that Apple fanboys think paying $1500+ for an 8GB ram laptop is a good deal.

  • Isn't this 10% off is like BAU every few weeks?

    • Yep. Consumers are finally waking up to Apple’s BS tactic of stagnating base RAM over the past few years.

  • Apple AOC channels should be cheaper and you can still use Apple GC for further discounts.

    Cheapo Mac mini: $999 RRP => $899 @ TGG => $795 @ AOC

    • It was the same price ($2,159) when I compared the MacBook Air 13 M3 16GB/512GB, plus you can also use TGG gift cards for an extra 4% off if you wish.

      • That’s very strange as AOC should always come with higher discounts, even higher than education price.

        • It's a straight 10% on RRP in this case

  • Just not good enough value for money in my opionion.

    • +1

      What do you suggest?

  • +3

You do not need more than 8GB for video editing, photoshop etc. I have run shell scripts to order, merge, and speed up by a factor of 64 over 12 hours worth of HD dashcam footage as a background task. This is on a M1 MacBook Pro.

I also run data processing tasks with quite large datasets using R and Python, again all with ease.

I cannot do this on a windows machine with 8GB RAM.

If you think you might need more than 8, you probably don’t. But before you commit, try out a mate’s machine to see how you go.

Price matched Officeworks an Apple Macbook Air 13" M3 16GB 512GB at Apple Broadway today. They had all the colours except the new black model.

For me, it worked out to be good value as I was planning to buy a custom spec model with upgraded RAM but for an extra $100 I also doubled the storage.

I know they are expensive but hey every other Macbook I've owned has lasted 5-7 years so it works out great value for me anyway.
