is this better than the panasonic/eneloop smart chargers (BQ-CC55)?

      Get LiitoKala Lii-402

      • +1

Is that better? I found it here for US$10.70 + GST (~A$18.50 delivered)

        • +1

I have that too, wondering if its the XTAR is worth getting just for the display

        • I've got a similar one but is the one you linked Type C, i've a got a micro usb one. Can't seem to see from the product page, although the images seem to be type C.

        • +2

Get the Xtar VC4SL or VC4 Plus it has better display and takes larger batteries. USB C powered and can do 3A charging. No problems with charging eneloops. If you don't need fast charging and want the USB C powered charger get the Liitokala M4s, it's cheaper and does a good job.

          • @zealmax: Slow charging keeps the battery longer

            • @Feeblely: Batteries are cheap to replace. Not worth the inconvinience for me.

            • +2

@Feeblely: Not necessarily- it's partially dependent on the battery chemistry.

NiMH batteries should be charged fairly quickly (over 0.5C) otherwise the charger can have a hard time detecting when the cell is almost full. Which is why those cheap slow chargers that are based purely on timers are so bad.

iirc lithiums should also charge between 0.5-1.0C.

              • @rumblytangara: For a 5000mah battery that is between 2.5A and 5A. I charge anything above 2000mah at 1A. 2A if I am in a hurry.

                • @zealmax: Hmm… just thought about this a bit more.

This Xtar does 1000mW for two channels, 500mW for the other two channels.

2.3 to 6.6 hours to charge a depleted 18650 cell.

                  • +1

                    @rumblytangara: The VC4SL does 3A x 1, 2A x 2, 1A x4 4. VC4 is an older version.

        • I got the Lii 500. It has the advantage of testing and selecting the charge rate which the VC4 doesn't. I gave my VC4 to my parents for the various rechargeable batteries they have. It is handy as it comes with the USB-A to barrel plug cable though some of the newer chargers have usb-c.

i got their next one up - charge, discharge test, repair - big screen well worth the extra

      • My Li-402 sort of died recently (it seems to charge but the leds don't show any status so it is a guessing game now), so will give this a try this time.

    • +1

This one charges lithium batteries too, the Panasonic/eneloop charger doesn't.

    • If you're just charging eneloops, then no.

  • I've used this for a few years. It works well.

  • any good options for higher capacity (i.e charge 8 at the same time) models?

  • +3

Still waiting for a good sale on Vapcell S4 Plus charger. Unfortunately it is like 3 times the price of this one :(

    • +1

I’ve got a spare S4+ that isn’t being used I could sell for a reasonable price

  • I used this for quite a while without issue. Just checked and I paid $55 with two 18650s in 2018 FWIW.

    • 39.95 in 2019, with no batteries.

which one got a harder shafting?

Just used this charger in the morning to repair a low voltage 21700 battery*
it detect as 0V initially but power is slowly charing to the battery
and bring the battery back to life after 30mins (back to 3.6V)

I would say the only down side of this charger is the charging rate is pretty slow
max 1A but only 0.5A when using all the 4 slots

*Was originally planning to get the more expensive liitokala lii-600 to repair batteries

  • +2

Would be better if the charger cable is using a USB-C connector

    • This is a hard requirement for me. I have one USB-C adapter which charges everything. There's no going back now.

    • +2

Xtar VC4SL/VC4 Plus, Liitokala M4/M4s all USB C.

  • +2

Have been using this one for ages, highly recommend, especially at this price!

    WELL DONE OP!

  • +5

Finally no more chucking out my eneloops after 1 use!

  • How would this compare to the classic Technoline BC700?

  • XTAR VC4 LCD 4 Bay Universal 18650 Battery Charger for 3.7V Li-ion Rechargeable Battery
    18650 21700 18350 17670 17500 16340 14500 and Ni-MH Ni-CD Rechargeable AA AAA Batteries

    $30.90

The price has gone up now.

  • Gah! I just watched a video review of the Xtar L8 charger, and that sold me. Then I saw this. :(
