Phone Shop Wants Phone Password

I had a broken charge port . Took it to phone bot, they wanted the password to check the charge port 😕. Then took it to city phones in Melbourne cbd who didn't need need or want the password at all and also fixed it.
What can they do with your phone password. Can they get all my pre saved passwords onto their computer or something?

This is phone bot by the way. Who also wouldn't honor a charging port under warranty. They said a charge port is physical damage, even though it had been playing up since I got it.
If city phones don't need your password to test and change a charge port, why does phone bot.

And I say they are data thiefs

You can be sued for making libellous claims.

In this instance, and under the Uniform Defamation Laws, no they cannot.

even though it had been playing up since I got it.

Why didn't you take it back when you got it then?
Or at least informed them, so they have a record that it already had a fault…

  • Maybe fixing the broken charge port necessitates turning the phone off, fixing it and turning it on again.

Turning it on, with the Password, they can check it works… without less so…

    Simples.

City phones are a samsung authoised repairer so was the gold standard. They had no interest in the phone password for a charge port so why should phone bot

      • +1

Maybe City phones saw some dust in the port, removed it and didn't need the password.

I was worried about that scam but they did give my the old port to prove it was replaced

What can they do with your phone password.

With your phone password, they could access all your data and even clone it.

However I wouldn't assume malicious intent.

Could they have access to all my saved passwords stored by my google account?

      • With your phone unlocked can you access those things? If so, then so could they.

        • Was more thinking if they could copy them to use on another device. Thought google saves them but you cant view them and just logs u in to sites like ******.now that i think about it . I think you can view them

  • What can they do with your phone password. Can they get all my pre saved passwords onto their computer of something?

Yep, all your photos, "fruit" pics, accounts, etc.

Honestly, this is a huge failing on your behalf. If a device leaves your control, it should be backed up and factory reset.

If city phones don't need your password to test and change a charge port, why does phone bot.

AFAIK, they should be capable of repairing without it - you should have asked for clarification around this point.

    • Yeah it was a mistake. Ive changed some passwords now. But key loggers and crap could of been installed? Should i just wipe the phone?

Your phone should have a repair mode, if it's a Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy flagship or iphone. Most other phone models don't have such a mode though.

    https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-repair-mode-coming-fo…

Repair Mode can be enabled by heading into the Settings menu and then going into the Battery and Device Care section. Once the mode is enabled, the phone will reboot, blocking access to important and personal information. In Repair Mode, the phone will still retain access to all stock applications. So, in essence, it will look like it was reset back to its factory state.

Once the repair is complete, the owner of the device can regain access to the data by either using their PIN number or fingerprint.

  • Yeah thats handy. My phone is older than a s21 tho haha. I didn't know about that. Will definitely do that next time I have that option. You would think a phone shop should suggest that to you when they ask fir your password. They would know about it
