University Admin Jobs - Ideas?

Hi all! I'm in Melbourne working as student service in a public university. Been doing this for 2 years, previously was in similar role in an RTO. I'm looking to move into non-student facing, back-end admin role, not fussed about the area but preferably those with high ladder to climb in the future.

I'm not limiting myself to university/higher education, so where would you suggest me to look at aside from higher up roles from other unis in Melbourne?

Extra stats: I don't have degree (only cert IV training assessment & diploma of hospitality), don't enjoy sales role

Thanks everyone!!!

Talked to HR? Or seen any jobs you think you could do and looked at the skills required to fill the gap?

The problem with human facing admin is the human facing part is the real skill.

Lotsa options though, do a finance/bookkeeping/payroll course and move into payroll or AR/AP seems the obvious one to me. ATO could be an option too (although you get to spend a lot of time on the phone).

      talk to HR

op: do you have any roles where I can get paid the same, but basically dont have to interact with external shareholders - I have bloody had it UP TO HERE with these international students!

      Hr: sweating

    • Rostering could be an option too. Doesn't require a degree and you'll only need to deal with staff (and their bullshit) rather than students.

I'm starting to get sick of dealing with international students (and their bullshit)

Whoa, off to a good start already.

    • please define these issues you have the deal with while getting paid for it

Have you looked internally? That's how I moved on from Student Services (my uni has a good culture of promoting internally)

I have but since my uni is a smaller branch of the main one in another state, the opportunities here are limited, sadly. What uni is yours?

One that I'm not going to disclose on here

    Please elaborate OP ,

stab in the dark, language barriers? Also culture difference.

      • It’s more than that, the not-so-subtle “And their bullshit” indicates to me that OP has assumed a negative opinion about international students in general. This discrimatory view won’t be looked at fondly in current and potential employers’ eyes.
We can give benefit of the doubts all we want, but I dare anyone tell their employers “I’m sick of transgenders/immigrants/dog-owners/tesla-drivers and their bullshit” with a straight face.

        • I tried it once… my boss told me to tame those turds

        • Eh you probably could get away saying that you're sick of Tesla drivers if you work some manufacturers that hate EVs lol

Their bullshit is probably the only thing holding the infrastructure together. Not that I approve of the growing commercialisation of Australia’s educational institutions…

      • Maybe also destroying the infrastructure?

preferably those with high ladder to climb in the future.

Melbourne Uni has some tall buildings where you can use a ladder.

They took the rungs out to make it more challenging

NGL, now i'm all for government roles but stories of Uni Admin and the toxicity involved makes me want to stay as far away from it as possible.

Have had friends that did these roles in student services etc. leave due to a female dominated matriarchal environment. Basically they'd surround themselves with yes people and revel in their new found toxic positivity until everything breaks and they blame everyone but themselves. This isn't confined to individual teams at universities but is fairly wide spread

It's one of the most overweight underperforming areas of work tbh.

I hate it when people plagiarise my CV!

Sorry to advise, in the higher education sector the ladder is not exactly vertiginous for employees with cert IV & diploma level qualifications. So your next investment should be to attain a degree. Otherwise consider moving to the VET/TAFE sector.
