Possums ruining my garden :( help?

Possums ate my rose, parsley, chives, spring onion, geranium, hydrangea plants :(

There are baby possums running around my garden even when I'm outside the garden. They are not afraid of human

What is the cheapest way to get rid of them? Any suggestions?

Someone suggested that I install a censor light in my backyard but I'm not sure if it's effective? Will they get used of the lights?

I'm thinking of getting a cage to trap them. Any recommendation on where to get cheap cage?

(P/S: I know they are protected animals but I really need to get rid of them!)

    Bikies.

  • If you trap them you're supposed to release them within 50 m.
    Try this:

    • Thanks. I'm thinking to trap them and put them at the reserve/park near my house

      • That would be illegal though.

They were there before you. I hate selfish humans sometimes.

      That's bananas B2

  • The parks use non climable surrounds on the trees so the possums can't climb back to their perches. You might try ringing something like the RSPCA to see if they can suggest the best way forward.

I don't think you can just put a trap out for them and they might get injured whilst you are doing this.

    • Thanks for the link. There are hedges in my backyard….so it's hard to prevent them…

Talk to the RSPCA, they can probably give you the best advice. I can sympathise with your plight - friends of ours have their garden beds meshed in to stop the birds, and any other critters, getting at them. I setup some strawberries a few years ago and our cat decided it was really nice we had preloosened the dirt for her to dig in.

        • Yea….I can imagine it's a nightmare for farmers as well. In NZ, possums are pests and they are hunted for their fur.

        • @xwon123: The possum in an introduced pest into NZ (by humans) - similar to rabbits and foxes in Australia - and are upsetting the NZ native ecosystem. The possums are native to Australia and the argument can be made that we are invading their territory, rather than the other way around. Humans are the worst thing that can be introduced into any ecosystem as we are the most disruptive and destructive. As long as the possums are trapped humanely, by the right people, I see no issue with moving them as proscribed by law. However, they are likely to return and the alternative of meshing off might be worth considering as they are very cute. (Just don't have a way into your roof space).

Most councils offer cat traps for hire but the repercussions for getting busted trapping them might not be worth the trouble.
Ideally you should try other methods first such as; sensor lights/sprinkler, odour deterrents such as garlic, ammonia, or commercial deterrents.
Failing that maybe try bird netting over your veggie beds.
    Good luck!

Find their den and spray them with a hose every day till they piss off.
